Integers

After the Natural numbers we next meet the Integers.

The Integers include all the whole positive and negative numbers and zero

We use N to stand for the set of Natural numbers but surprisingly we use Z to stand for the set of of Integers - this comes from the German for "number". This picture was taken in the German classroom.

Integers - Subtracting Negative Numbers

This page should help you to understand how we subtract negative numbers with a nice visual animation.

Don't try to analyse it too much - it is just another way of thinking about how you can subtract a negative!

Three PowerPoint presentations on the positive and negative numbers that also use this model.

You can always use the number line to help you understand adding and subtracting integers see these animations
